The frailty of man without God cannot but fall. This haunting clause from the collect for the 15th Sunday after Trinity permeates our lessons today. In Galatians 6, we see men striving through circumcision for their own righteousness apart from God. This endeavor is bound to fall. In Matthew 6, we see men also striving to meet their physical needs apart from God. We focus upon getting things for ourselves to protect from calamity and refuse to rest in the provision that God will supply. Our efforts apart from God are bound to fall. What do we do? We had a couple of baptisms today! In this sermon, we review some of the basics of baptism and draw connections to the lessons of the day. In Galatians, St. Paul argues that the Christians is not under the Mosaic Law and therefore circumcision is not to be required of the Christian who now is sealed and signed by baptism. And Christ instructs us in today’s gospel lesson from the Sermon on the Mount in Matthew 6, that those who are sealed in baptism must follow Christ with a singleness of mind. “No man can serve two masters. … Seek first the Kingdom of God, and all these things shall…
